IronTally

The workout tracker that tells you why.

IronTally on the barbell bench press: today’s suggestion is 82.5 kg for 8 reps, with a “Why” link next to it.

One tally mark per session.

Example: bench press, range 8 to 12 reps. One more rep each session until you hit 12. Then the weight goes up.

  1. Session 180 kg × 8
  2. Session 280 kg × 9
  3. Session 380 kg × 10
  4. Session 480 kg × 11
  5. Session 580 kg × 12top of range
  6. Session 682.5 kg × 8+2.5 kg

When the weight goes up, and why.

Every suggestion comes with a “Why”. Tap it to see the sets it’s based on and the rule that’s in play. In this example: plus 2.5 kg, because you hit 12 clean reps last session.

You don’t have to follow a suggestion. Log what you actually lifted, and the app works from there.

The “Why this suggestion?” sheet: plus 2.5 kg because you hit 12 clean reps last session, followed by the sets the suggestion is based on.

New to the gym? Skip the jargon.

Beginner mode drops RIR and the technical terms. After each set, the app asks one question: How was the set?

  • Easy
  • Hard
  • Barely

Progression stays simple: reps first, then weight. Want more control? Switch modes any time.

After a set, IronTally asks: How was the set? The options are Easy, Hard and Barely.

FAQ

When should I increase the weight in strength training?

That depends on your progression rule. With double progression, for example, it’s as soon as you hit the top of your rep range with clean reps. IronTally checks this on every set and shows you why it’s time, or why it isn’t yet.

What is double progression?

You stay at the same weight and add reps until you reach the top of your range, say 12 in an 8 to 12 range. Then the weight goes up and you start again at 8. That’s how beginner mode works.

What does RIR mean, and do I have to log it?

RIR stands for “reps in reserve”: how many more clean reps you could have done. In standard mode it’s part of every set. Beginner mode drops it; there you just pick Easy, Hard or Barely.

What happens if I take a break from training?

IronTally notices the break and tells you, instead of carrying on as if nothing had happened. Deload phases are built in.

Can I use my own training plan?

Yes. You can set up your own programs, exercises and rep ranges, and the plan follows your split. Ready-made programs for push/pull/legs, upper/lower and full body are included.

Is IronTally available for iPhone?

No, IronTally is Android only. It has nothing to do with other products that are also called IronTally.
